puppiekitten2What Do Foster Homes Do?

Foster parents provide the basic needs for an animal while it is in their care.  This includes: food, shelter, love and basic training. Foster parents also work in partnership with Save-A-Pet to find the animal a permanent loving home. We depend on our foster parent to work diligently to ensure the potential adopter is a good fit for their animal. Many of our rescue animals have had a rough life, we want to do all we can to ensure they get the fresh start in a loving home they deserve. Our rescue animals want the chance to love and trust again....it becomes the foster parent's responsibility to make sure they get just that!

What Type of Animals Need Foster Care?

Most often we need foster care for highly adoptable dogs and cats that simply need a place for transition while a permanent home is found for them. Due to the crisis of homeless animals in our area, the Dothan Animal Shelter constantly struggles with overcrowding and is therefore forced to make difficult decisions. Foster care enables these loveable animals to get the second chance they deserve. There are also special cases where foster homes are always needed, this includes:

  • Pregnant or nursing mother dogs with their puppies
  • Pregnant or nursing mother cats with their kittens
  • Dogs that need special training or improved social skills
  • Fearful animals that can not cope with the stressful kennel environment

Why Foster a Senior Animal?

The typical animal shelter is a stressful environment for any animal. It is particularly hard on seniors, who are generally less able to deal with stress and may experience more disorientation than a younger animal. A senior animal who is fostered rather than kept at a shelter will maintain or more quickly regain good emotional and physical health, and therefore be vastly more appealing as a candidate for adoption. A senior animal who lives in a home environment rather than a shelter while they are waiting for permanent placement will inevitably make a better transition to their new home and family, and therefore decrease the chances that they will be displaced again.

Please consider becoming a foster parent today and give a homeless animal the second chance at a loving home they deserve.
