Our community is in a crisis of homeless animals and unfortunately most of us turn a blind eye. As you can imagine, these animals are often mistreated, malnourished, in need of veterinary care, but more importantly they need a loving home with an owner they can trust. Last year alone, the Dothan Animal shelter took in almost 5800 animals, with Save-A-Pet assisting in finding homes for over 2600 of these homeless animals.
Save-A-Pet is an all volunteer non-profit organization [501(C)(3)] dedicated to finding loving homes for shelter animals through adoptions and transports. We do not receive local, state, or federal funding; therefore, we are funded entirely by private donations and fund raising events. Our largest expenditure comes from providing veterinary care for animals, including: surgeries, spay/neutering, vaccinations and more. We work tirelessly to transport healthy dogs and puppies to other states where they are more adoptable, providing funds are available.
Save-A-Pet works in partnership with the Dothan Animal Shelter, where almost all of our rescue animals originate. These animals have been picked up as strays, cruelty cases, or turned in by owners who are no longer willing to care for them. As I am sure you are aware, since the shelter must accept these animals, regardless of their available space, they are faced with a difficult situation. While having a no-kill shelter is unrealistic due to severely aggressive and injured animals, lowering the euthanization rate is absolutely reasonable.
We are the voice of these animals, that of no fault of their own, have found themselves homeless and searching for someone to give them a second chance. Save-A-Pet truly believes with increased awareness of the critical situation these animals are faced with, our community will embrace them and our mission to promote the rescue and placement of homeless animals through adoption and transport and to encourage spay/neuter through education and life saving programs.
